Masahiko Fujihara, MD
Vice Director of Cardiology, Osaka Keisatsu Hospital
Masahiko Fujihara, MD, is a highly distinguished cardiovascular interventionist and a globally recognized expert in endovascular therapy (EVT). With a career dedicated to advancing the treatment of complex cardiovascular and peripheral artery diseases (PAD), Dr. Fujihara currently serves as the Vice President and Chief Director of the Department of Cardiology at Nozaki Tokushukai Hospital in Osaka, Japan. His clinical and research focus centers on optimizing outcomes for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and heavily calcified lesions through state-of-the-art imaging and innovative device applications.
Dr. Fujihara earned his medical degree from the Nihon University School of Medicine in Tokyo in 2004. He subsequently completed his residency and early clinical training at Kyushu University Hospital and Fukuoka East Medical Center. Over the past two decades, he has held progressive leadership roles, notably at Kishiwada Tokushukai Hospital, where he advanced from Chief of Cardiology to Director, before assuming his current executive role at Nozaki Tokushukai Hospital in April 2025.
A pioneer in the use of intravascular imaging, Dr. Fujihara has been instrumental in establishing protocols for IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound) and OFDI (Optical Frequency Domain Imaging)-guided interventions in lower limb revascularization. His meticulous approach to lesion morphology assessment has significantly influenced how interventionists worldwide tackle heavily calcified femoropopliteal and infrapopliteal diseases. His clinical excellence is matched by his commitment to regulatory and academic advancement; since 2017, he has served as an Advisor to Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), playing a crucial role in the evaluation of new cardiovascular technologies.
Dr. Fujihara is a prolific researcher and educator. He has authored or co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including the *Journal of Endovascular Therapy*, *Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions*, and *JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions*. His research frequently explores the efficacy of drug-coated balloons (DCBs), drug-eluting stents, and interwoven nitinol stents, providing critical real-world evidence that shapes global clinical guidelines. Furthermore, he is a leading voice in multidisciplinary approaches to wound healing in CLTI patients.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Fujihara is a cornerstone of the international endovascular community. He serves as a Board Member and Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Japan Endovascular Treatment Conference (JET) and holds prominent faculty positions at premier global congresses, including LINC (Leipzig Interventional Course), TCT (Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics), VIVA, and ENCORE Seoul. As a frequent live demonstration operator and invited lecturer, he passionately shares his expertise in complex EVT strategies, vessel preparation, and imaging-guided therapies with peers around the world.
Through his unwavering dedication to clinical excellence, rigorous research, and international education, Dr. Masahiko Fujihara continues to drive innovation in cardiovascular interventions, profoundly improving the quality of life for patients with severe vascular disease.
